Why Varroa Levels Fluctuate Seasonally
Varroa mite population dynamics follow the brood cycle with a predictable delay. When the colony is broodless in winter, mites have nowhere to reproduce — mite numbers plateau or slowly decline. When brood production peaks in spring and summer, mite populations explode. A single mite in April can become 15–20 mites by August if unchecked.
The key threshold: above 3% mite load (3 mites per 100 bees) in summer is dangerous. Above 5% in autumn is a crisis. The rule of thumb: treat when mite drop exceeds 10–15 mites per day in a 24-hour natural drop test, or when alcohol wash shows more than 3 mites per half-cup of bees.

Vaporization (sublimation) is the most effective method: 2 grams of oxalic acid sublimated per broodless colony, repeated 3 times at 5-day intervals to catch mites as they emerge from cells.
- January: Apply oxalic acid vaporization if broodless. Check entrance reducers and mouse guards — stress from cold weakens bees further.
- February: In warm climates, brood may start early. If brood is present, stop OA vaporization. Plan spring treatment schedule.
- March: First spring inspection — note colony strength. This is your mite baseline before the breeding season begins. If you have spring honey supers, choose thymol-based treatments only.
April to June — Build-Up Season
Brood production accelerates. This is when you want low mite loads going in — high mite counts now will compound rapidly. If you did not treat in winter, April is your last practical window before brood becomes widespread.
- April: Treat with formic acid (MAQS strips) if spring mite count exceeded 2%. Formic acid kills mites under cappings — the only treatment that reaches brood-infesting mites. Track the treatment window: MAQS requires minimum 14 consecutive days above 10°C.
- May: Brood is extensive — no single treatment fully reaches mites inside cells. Use integrated pest management: drone comb trapping (insert drone foundation, remove and freeze capped drone comb every 3 weeks) alongside soft chemical treatments. - June: Pre-honey-flow treatment window for spring honey producers. Apiguard (thymol gel) is the standard choice: 50g tray per brood chamber, replaced after 28 days. Compatible with honey supers if used correctly.

July to August — Critical Treatment Window
This is the most dangerous period for varroa. The summer brood production peak creates ideal conditions for mite reproduction, and colonies are simultaneously preparing for winter. Mite levels in July–August directly determine whether colonies survive the following winter.
- July: Perform an alcohol wash before any late-summer honey harvest. Mite loads above 3% require immediate treatment. If you are extracting summer honey, remove Apivar or MAQS strips before the honey super goes on.
- August: The post-harvest window is critical. Apply oxalic acid dribble or formic acid immediately after honey supers are removed. This is the single most important treatment of the year for winter survival in most climates. Track mite drop daily using a sticky board under the screened bottom board.
September to December — Winter Preparation
The goal by October is a colony with minimal mite load going into winter brood. A colony with high varroa in autumn will collapse by February or March — not from starvation, but from Deformed Wing Virus overload transmitted by mites feeding on pupae.
- September: If you have not yet treated post-harvest, apply oxalic acid immediately. October treatments are less effective if the colony has entered its winter broodless phase in colder climates.
- October to November: Perform final mite count. Ideal: zero mites or below 1% in autumn wash. If above 2%, treat with oxalic acid dribble (3 applications 3 days apart) while brood is still present.
- December: Colony is broodless or nearly so. Final OA vaporization treatment if mites remain above threshold. This is the last chance before winter clustering.
