Why Colonies Swarm — The Biology
Swarming is colony reproduction at the colony level. When a colony perceives it has reached peak strength — maximum adult population, abundant food stores, a healthy queen, and a broodnest that has filled most of the available space — its biology triggers the reproductive program.
The sequence: scout bees identify the colony's reproductive readiness; the queen's pheromone distribution decreases as the broodnest expands; workers begin building queen cups (not queen cells yet — cups are the starting point); the queen lays eggs in multiple queen cups; workers stop feeding the queen to reduce her weight for flight; on a warm, sunny day, the old queen departs with 50–60% of adult bees as the swarm.
The remaining colony, now queenless, completes the queen cells that were started and the new queen mates and begins laying. Two colonies from one — if conditions are right.

- Queen cups: Peanut-shaped cups built on the face or bottom of frames, not yet containing eggs. Cups alone are not a swarm sign — they are a readiness signal. Check daily once cups appear.
- Eggs in queen cups: The critical sign. If a cup contains a freshly laid egg or young larva, the swarm preparation has begun.
- Sealed queen cells: An emergency. The swarm departs within 8–12 days of capping. You have a narrow window to make a split before the old queen leaves.
- Congested brood nest: Brood in the center, pollen in a ring around it, and honey on the outer frames — a full, tight broodnest with no empty cells is a crowding signal.

The Demaree Method — The Gold Standard of Swarm Control
The Demaree (named after 19th-century beekeeper G. Demaree) is the most reliable non-destructive swarm control technique. It separates the queen from the brood using a queen excluder, forcing the colony to raise a new queen while the old queen continues laying below.
How to perform the Demaree:
- Find the queen and the brood nest. Smoke the colony gently.
- Move all brood frames (queen included) to the bottom box. Place a queen excluder directly on top of this box.
- Add an empty box above the excluder. Place the brood frames back in their original order above the excluder — the colony thinks the broodnest has expanded.
- Place the honey super(s) on top of the upper box.
- Check the upper box in 7 days: queen cells may be present — remove them all. The colony will not swarm with the queen below the excluder.
The Demaree is particularly effective because it uses the colony's own biology to solve the crowding problem without splitting or reducing the colony's honey-gathering force.
Making Splits — Turning Swarming Impulse into Expansion
The split is the simplest swarm prevention: create a new colony from the old one before the old queen leaves. A artificial swarm (colony-made split) is more reliable than waiting for a natural swarm because you control the timing and can ensure the new colony has a mated queen.
Walkaway split: Take 2–3 frames of brood (with adhering bees) and one frame of honey/pollen. Shake additional bees from 2 frames into the new box. Close the new colony and do not check for 7 days. The brood frames will produce an emergency queen. Check on day 7 for queen cell construction.
Nucleus colony split: Place the split near the parent hive with a mated queen or queen cell from a queenright donor colony. Feed the split 1:1 syrup and monitor for acceptance.

Swarm Traps — Catching Swarms That Get Away
Despite best management, some swarms will escape. Swarm traps baited with synthetic queen mandibular pheromone (QMP) can recover up to 80% of local swarms. Place 2–3 traps in your apiary from March through June, 3–5 meters above ground, facing south or southeast. Check traps every 2–3 days once bloom begins.
