Early Warning Signs (3–4 Weeks Before Swarming)

Start watching for these during May inspections:

  • Congestion — every frame is covered with bees, there's no "breathing room." The colony has outgrown its space.
  • Bearding — large clusters of bees hanging outside the entrance or on the bottom board, especially in the evening. Not just temperature management — can signal overcrowding.
  • Decreased foraging activity — paradoxically, swarming colonies sometimes reduce foraging as bees "prepare" for departure
  • Increased drone production — a colony preparing to swarm produces more drones than usual. Drones are needed to mate with new queens after the swarm.

Urgent Warning Signs (1–2 Weeks Before Swarming)

1. Add Space Before They Need It

The most common mistake: waiting until a colony is bursting before adding a super. The rule of thumb is to add a honey super when 7 of 10 frames in the brood box are covered with bees — not when all 10 are packed. Adding space proactively is far more effective than reactive management.

2. Remove Queen Cells

If you find queen cups or cells, you can buy yourself time by removing them — but this only works if you address the underlying cause (overcrowding). If you remove queen cells every week without adding space, you're fighting a losing battle. The bees will keep building them.

Important: if you miss even one queen cell during a search, swarming can still occur. Be thorough.

3. The Artificial Swarm Split

  • Place 2–3 frames of partially capped honey from the brood box in the center of the super — bees recognize familiar wax and are drawn upward more readily
  • Fill remaining super slots with drawn comb (if available) rather than bare foundation — bees can fill drawn comb much faster
  • Ensure your queen excluder (if using one) is properly seated — you don't want brood in the super

Recording Super Additions in Beekeeping Diary

  • Number of frames added and their type

  • Notes on honey flow intensity
  • Target date for next check

Honey is ready to extract when 80% or more of the super frames are capped with wax. Extracting too early means high moisture content — honey that will ferment in the jar. Do the "shake test": if uncapped honey drips out easily when you shake a frame horizontally, it's not ready. If it stays, it's close enough.
